Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kajol have come together for a drama film based on Kashmir Militancy and unrest. Ibrahim Ali Khan is playing a prominent leading role with senior actors like a shield from his earlier ones. The movie is produced by Karan Johar and directed by debutant Kayoze Irani, son of Boman Irani. The movie released directly on OTT platform, Jio Hotstar. Let's discuss about the film, in detail.

Plot:

Colonel Vijay Menon (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and his wife Meher (Kajol) are a loving couple. Their son Harman (Ibrahim Ali Khan) has a speech disorder, stuttering. He wants to be a military official like his father but Vijay doesn't regard him fit. He behaves harshly towards him as a kid. One day, Harman gets kidnapped and the terrorist group asks Vijay to leave their leaders for his son's life. Vijay doesn't heed to their demands and he gets to know that Harman could be killed. But he returns after 8 years and Vijay thinks he could have returned as a terroist. Is Vijay right? What would Meher do in this situation? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:

Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kajol did their best to make these characters believable. Their performances could not really rise above the mediocre script and execution also feels too dazzed. The writing could have been much better with each character arc being executed properly. There is a scope for lot of drama just like Mission Kashmir but it fails to realise that emotional strength to the forefront.

Ibrahim Ali Khan tried but he still needs a lot of improvement. But it can be categorised as better from his previous film. Even the cinematography and editign don't really help the pacing. Kayoze Irani fails to capture the action sequences and emotional scenes with impact. Everything looks to have been stretched out too long and even the action doesn't really have no weight.

While the production values are good, the movie lacks good arresting drama. Even the impact of the emotional scenes is lost due to slow narrative that doesn't really improve interest on the proceedings and the story. The predictability in the second hour also works against it. Sarzameen needed much better writing and execution  with the dramatic beats laid out all over but fails to effectively narrate the story.

Bottomline:

Sarzameen lacks cohesive and effective narrative.

Rating: 1.5/5
