Tamil Film Fraternity divided with CM Vijay decision

May 18, 2026

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s decision to appoint Egmore MLA Rajmohan as the Minister for Film Technology and Cinematograph Act has sparked an unexpected debate within the Tamil film fraternity. For the first time since taking office, the actor-turned-politician is facing public dissatisfaction from his own industry peers, who have historically been his unwavering supporters.

Actor Vishal was the first to openly express his disappointment on social media. He stated that it was disheartening to see the bleeding film industry placed under the care of someone with limited experience. Vishal emphasized that producers and associations needed a representative who truly understands their struggles, reminding the Chief Minister of long-pending demands like a government ticketing window, abolishing local body taxes, and increasing subsidies for small films.

However, this criticism was quickly met with resistance from others in the industry who urged patience. Actor Arun Vijay indirectly countered Vishal, suggesting that the fraternity should not question top government decisions and must trust that the Chief Minister is well aware of their problems. Similarly, actor and director Raghava Lawrence appealed to the industry to give Rajmohan a fair opportunity and time to settle into his new role. Producer T. Siva also backed the appointment, highlighting Rajmohan’s strong ties within the cinema sector and his past directorial experience.

This difference of opinion highlights a rare divide among cinema professionals, showing that while they celebrate one of their own leading the state, expectations for immediate, expert-led industry reforms remain incredibly high.
