The latest teaser for HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has finally offered a substantial look at the highly anticipated reboot, but it does little to answer the biggest question surrounding the series: why does this story need to be retold so soon after the hugely successful film franchise?
Released on September 2, the new teaser runs through several of the most recognisable moments from Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, including the Sorting Ceremony, Quidditch, the dungeon troll sequence, Herbology classes and Harry’s first experiences with the wizarding world. It also gives audiences a better look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron, alongside John Lithgow’s Dumbledore, Janet McTeer’s McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu’s Snape.
The problem is that much of what is being showcased already exists in the collective memory of audiences. Several shots and story beats naturally invite comparisons with the 2001 film, and early reactions have highlighted the similarities rather than any strikingly different creative approach.
That does not necessarily make the series a bad idea. HBO’s biggest advantage is its format: the first season will have eight episodes, giving Francesca Gardiner and her team considerably more room to explore material from J.K. Rowling’s first book than the feature film could.
But as a teaser designed to reignite Harry Potter fever, this one falls short. Instead of creating anticipation for a new interpretation, it mostly reminds viewers of the version they already know and love. With the series arriving on Christmas Day, HBO will need to reveal more of its own identity before the premiere.
