A Naxal story is usually expected to come with violence, ideology and political intensity. Comrade Kalyan appears to have other plans. The teaser takes a backdrop associated with serious conflict and gives it an unexpectedly irreverent spin, with Sree Vishnu playing a man who seems far more interested in his own agenda than revolutionary ideology.

Set against a Naxal-dominated village on the Andhra-Odisha border, the teaser hints at a story involving an old theatre, a Naxal group and the kidnapping of one of its leaders. The reasons behind his actions are deliberately kept unclear, giving the film a mystery beyond its comedy.

The biggest takeaway, however, is Sree Vishnu’s performance. He approaches the character with a straight face even when the situations around him become increasingly absurd. That deadpan delivery, combined with his one-liners, gives the teaser its distinctive flavour.

Shine Tom Chacko appears to be on the opposite side of the conflict, with their cat-and-mouse dynamic providing several comic moments. Radhikaa Sarathkumar, Satya and Sudharshan also contribute to the humour, while Mahima Nambiar appears as the female lead.

The teaser also benefits from Vijai Bulganin’s background score, which matches the film’s quirky tone. Directed by Janikram Marella, Comrade Kalyan is scheduled to release on October 9.
