The 72nd National Film Awards to be held in Gujarat

Sep 8, 2026 12:55PM

The National Film Awards are set for a notable change this year, with the 72nd edition moving away from its traditional Delhi setting. The ceremony will take place at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on September 22, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the awards to the winners.

The change of venue is significant as the National Film Awards have largely been associated with New Delhi since the awards were introduced in 1954. Over the years, the ceremony has become one of the most important occasions on the Indian film calendar, bringing together winners from different languages and film industries.

Ekta Nagar, formerly known as Kevadia, is particularly known for the Statue of Unity. Hosting the ceremony at the Gujarat landmark gives this year's event a different backdrop from the conventional government venues in the capital.

The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced earlier this year, with several major names from across Indian cinema making it to the honours list. Article 370 was named Best Feature Film, while Yami Gautam won Best Actress for her performance in the film. Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor award for Bramayugam and Chandu Champion respectively.

South Indian cinema also featured prominently among the winners. Kalki 2898 AD won Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while Captain Miller received recognition in the category for films promoting national, social or environmental values.
