Twenty-five years after the historic success of Lagaan, Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker are teaming up once again for an ambitious period sports drama. This upcoming film is a biopic based on the life of Lala Amarnath, the legendary cricketer who served as India's first national team captain and led the squad to its first Test series victory against Pakistan in 1952.
Aamir Khan is set to play the titular role of Lala Amarnath. In an exciting new development, Farhan Akhtar is currently in talks to join the cast as Amarnath's closest friend. The film is expected to focus heavily on their deep bond, which gets tested against the emotional and turbulent backdrop of the India-Pakistan partition, as Farhan's character eventually relocates to Pakistan.
The project brings together some of the biggest names in the industry. The core story is penned by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who also contributed to the screenplay alongside Abhijat Joshi. Production duties are being shared by Aamir Khan, Excel Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani. The makers are reportedly planning to take the film on floors by October 2026 with a strict start-to-finish shooting schedule.
