Death toll in Pak factory fire rises

At least 60 people have been killed in a fire that raged in a garment factory in the southern city of Karachi, bringing the death toll in two deadly fires in the country to 85. 60 bodies had been taken to the hospital. He said many were so badly burned that it was impossible to tell whether they were male or female. The fire in Karachi, Pakistan’s economic heart, was one of two deadly blazes to erupt in Pakistan late Tuesday. The other at a shoe factory in the eastern city of Lahore killed 25 people.

10 killed in Russian plane crash

Ten people died and four were seriously injured when a plane crashed on Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia. A 4-year-old girl was among the dead, the Interfax news agency reported, citing the ministry of civil defence. The Antonov An-28 went down near the village of Palanka. The propeller plane had 12 passengers and two crew on board. It took off from the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Situation under control in Kudankulam

Situation in Tamil Nadu’s Idinthakarai village, the movement against the Kudankulam nuclear project, was under control after three days of protests. The fast at Idinthakarai village in Tirunelveli, against the Kudankulam nuclear power project, is still on, he said. On Tuesday night, protest leaders went missing after their abduction by local fishermen. Leaders of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy were abducted by fishermen to prevent them from surrendering to police.  However, in a dramatic turn of events, fishermen took away  Udayakumar and Pushparayan in a boat.

His hand was removed with axe when he asked for salary

In a shocking case, a labourer's hand was chopped in Garhwa district of Jharkhand allegedly after he asked his employers for his salary. The incident happened on Sunday. The proprietors who run an illegal alcohol making unit, punished labourer Aliyaar when he demanded his three month's pending wages to feed his family.

Narendra Modi's election campaign kicks off on Advani's rath today

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will begin his month-long yatra from the religious town of Becharaji in north Gujarat today, which will cover major parts of the state. Interestingly, the name of Modi's yatra is Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra, which will begin on the day when spiritual leader Swami Vivekanada made his historic speech at the Chicago Conference of World Religions, 150 years ago. Billed as a beginning of his electoral campaign, the rath yatra will cover all the districts of the state. Interestingly, Modi will move in the same rath which was used by senior party leader LK Advani during last year's jan chetna yatra.

Hindu migrants seek refugee status

Representatives of Hindu migrants from Pakistan, who arrived by the Thar Express on Sunday, met Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday in Jodhpur and sought refugee status for them. The group of 171, comprising 35 women and around 70 children and youth, appeared determined as they told Mr. Gehlot that they did not want to go back. The migrants were led by Hindu Singh Sodha, Jodhpur-based social activist. He has been working for the rehabilitation and citizenship of the “displaced” Hindus from Pakistan. Mr. Gehlot promised “all possible” help and instructed the District Collector to provide all help to the migrants. In the meantime, he would talk to the Centre on the issue, Mr. Gehlot told Mr. Sodha at the Jodhpur airport where they had the meeting

Bus falls into gorge, 35 killed

Thirty-five persons were feared dead as a State-run bus skidded off the road and fell into a 1,000-metre deep gorge near Mallu area in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday evening. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation bus, carrying about 40 persons, was on its way from Palampur to Ashapuri temple when it fell down from a hilltop on Palampur - Ashapuri road, 40-km from the spot.

Shinde sees foreign NGOs’ hand in Kudankulam

The Centre on Monday blamed foreign non-governmental organisations for aiding protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu and reiterated that the government was committed to producing clean and cheap nuclear energy in the country. Pushing the case for nuclear energy, Shinde said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had made it clear that India needed nuclear energy, which was clean and a cheap source of energy.

Kudankulam protests: One killed in police firing

One person was killed in police firing when a crowd of anti-Kudankulam protestors attacked a police check post in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district Monday, police said. Three police officials were injured in the attack, A mob of around 400 people protesting against the baton charging of fishermen protesting against the nuclear power plant in Kudankulam attacked a check post at Manapaddu village. There were four police personnel at the check post, including one women constable.
