Will Suriya's Retro work as a web series?
on Jun 17, 2025
Suriya has a huge fan following in Tamil and Telugu states. Earlier in his career, post a film like Nandha, he started experimenting and it grew his image in both the languages. Even his consistency earned him fans in Kerala and he started trying out bigger films in commercial angle.
But his reliance on over commercialisation of certain stories lead to him not having a big blockbuster success at the box office over a decade. Even his recent film, Retro failed to become a hit even though Karthik Subbaraj kind of a director made it. Suriya has even dropped Vaadivaasal film with Vetrimaaran.
Now, director Karthik Subbaraj revealed that he is planning to release Retro's extended version as a mini-series of 40-50 minute, 4-5 episodes on OTT platform. He stated that he has the content ready to release after 4 months and if OTT platform agrees, then, it will have more detailing about the cult, characters as well.
He stated that he is happy with the kind of film it turned out to be and the layers of story needs to be unfolded at length. He stated that this kind of a step would be the first for any film and Retro would benefit big time. While his excitement is understandable, will people be ready to watch it as a series?
Even though he is promising a more thorough experience, the film is not that popular theatrically or on OTT platforms since release. Also, Suriya, Pooja Hegde kind of stars may not be able to really promise to jag up audiences interest in a film that did not receive such welcoming reception.
Karthik Subbaraj might be highly impressed by his writing and execution but it did not translate on to the screen as he intended. So, expecting people to like it in series form looks a little outlandish. Maybe the director should let go of this and move on to his next with the feedback about what did not really work.
