Jason Sanjay debuting as a writer-director with Sigma, made headlines, as he is the son of TN CM Vijay. Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah have been cast in this film with a huge budget and it is produced by Lyca Productions. The movie released for Gandhi Jayanthi weekend after delays and let's discuss about it in detail.

Plot:

Guru (Sundeep Kishan) runs an old library has his mother asked him to never give it away. His father took heavy loans and sold off all their properties, still, Guru has to pay Rs.1.25 crores to a loan vulture. He keeps trying to make it on social media with story-telling but until he meets RJ Sam (Faria Abdullah), he doesn't succeed. He first uses her voice through AI but she later joins looking at the reception.

On the other hand, a forest based smuggler and drug peddler, Veerayya Reddy (Sampath) supplies his drug Ceaser to casinos and cracks a deal with a peddler to set-up more casinos. He sets up a vault with his money in forest and gives one key to person who wanted to partner with him. Meanwhile, Casino owner (Shiv Panditt) uses all ways to cheat players at his casino and make the house win. Sundeep lashes out at him but he later knows that he is sitting on the fortune left by Reddy. How? Will he be able to clear his debts? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:

Sundeep Kishan tries to infuse energy but the writing doesn't help him at all. His looks and his performance are good but still doesn't rise about the script. Faria Abdullah, Sampath, Raju Sundaram, Anbu Thasan scenes lack any impact. Shiv Panditt and his right hand man track are just too boring.

Movie tries to hard to sell emotions of the character trying to give them back stories. But none of them really leave an impact as the heist is dragged with each sequence looking like extension rather than going for a new resolve or twist. Movie takes logical liberties even within the world it had set-up.

None of the action scenes and sequences do not work as they have expected as they lack any tact. It feels like whatever is written on paper is not brought on to the screen with same effect or it lacked at the script stage itself. The production values and budget spent is seen but it feels wasted.

Cinematography, editing are good enough as we cannot just state that editor did not cut out portions when director needed them to be in, it feels so, while watching the movie. S Thaman's BGM and music are massive let down. Overall, Sigma doesn't work as a wholesome heist film that makers wanted it to be.

Positives:

Sundeep Kishan performance
Few scenes featuring Sampath
Production Values

Negatives:

Lethargic Writing
Lacklustre Script
Nothing working in second hour
Draggy Climax

Bottomline: Jason Sanjay doesn't impress with his debut as a director.

Rating: 2.25/5
