Retro verdict divides Suriya fans

on May 5, 2025

Suriya's Retro released on 1st May and the movie did not receive an overwhelming positive response as many of his fans have been anticipating. The actor has been facing a disaster streak from past 12 years at the box office. His two highly appreciated films - Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim have been direct OTT releases.

His Kanguva failed big time at the box office and hence, Retro needed to be a massive hit for being his big comeback theatrically. But Retro collections have not been up to their anticipation and even movie did not receive high acclaim. Fans wanted something like Virkam for their hero but Retro did not prove to be such a big one.

While some are trying to salvage the situation and trying to say that this is better film in recent years for the actor others are openly criticising it for being too long. Director Karthik Subbaraj stated that he did not find reviews substantial, as they all have been critical, and stated that he would not read them anymore.

At the same time, Pooja Hegde is being called as "Iron Leg" and she is being trolled for being in yet another flop. Some Suriya fans are busy fighting on social media with Ajith and Vijay fans. This is further turning out to be problematic for the film. Tourist Family, which released on same day, is getting better response.

So, the online fan wars about Retro being so disappointing at the box office and comparisons with other stars disasters have been going aplenty. Looks like the huge streak of flops did really effect some Suriya fans to forcefully at least see some green at the box office but the fact remains Retro has been underwhelming.
