The surprise success of DC is now creating a potential box-office problem for Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons. The film has already collected close to Rs.28 crore gross, and Sun Pictures is reportedly keen on retaining as many screens as possible for the second weekend. With the Independence Day holiday falling on August 15, the production house is looking to make the most of the sudden momentum and turn the film's positive reception into stronger theatrical revenue.
However, Vishwanath and Sons, which is releasing on August 14, could face a serious screen crunch if DC continues to grow. The Arun Matheswaran directorial has been generating increasingly positive word-of-mouth, with social media chatter reportedly spreading like wildfire after its release. What initially looked like a film that would have to fight for attention has suddenly become a strong theatrical competitor.
The buzz around DC has been driven significantly by Anirudh Ravichander's music. While the songs created decent anticipation before release, their popularity has apparently gone to another level after the film's theatrical release. Lokesh Kanagaraj, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy and director Arun Matheswaran are also receiving appreciation, but Anirudh appears to have emerged as the biggest talking point.
For Suriya, the timing is particularly important. The actor is coming off Karuppu, which emerged as a major blockbuster and came close to the Rs.300 crore gross mark worldwide. After a long phase without a major theatrical blockbuster, the success of Karuppu finally gave his career a much-needed boost. Films such as Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim were hugely acclaimed but skipped theatrical releases, making his wait for a major big-screen success even longer.
Vishwanath and Sons does have several positives going into the release. Venky Atluri, who delivered the unanimously appreciated Lucky Bhaskar, is directing the film, raising expectations for another engaging commercial entertainer. Mamitha Baiju is the leading lady, while Raveena Tandon and Radhika Sarathkumar are playing prominent roles. The trailer has also generated interest, although the overall pre-release buzz has remained relatively muted compared to Suriya's previous film.
That makes the theatre allocation a crucial factor. If DC continues its upward trajectory and exhibitors prefer to retain screens for the film during the holiday weekend, Vishwanath and Sons could find itself entering the race with fewer screens than expected. At the same time, a strong opening for Suriya's film could immediately change the equation.
Suriya finally found the blockbuster momentum he had been waiting for with Karuppu, and he would certainly want to carry that momentum forward. After establishing himself as one of the biggest stars of the 2000s, the actor is once again looking to reach those commercial peaks. Whether Vishwanath and Sons can overcome the unexpected DC challenge and continue his box-office resurgence will be interesting to watch.
