What to Expect from this Epic?
- On Technical front, the movie holds brilliantly even though it is ten years old. The first part and second part CGI, VFX, and cinematography for each frame have always been top class and makers prove that they have been forward thinking to create this sort of a special film.
- Except for the Avalanche Scene, VFX portions and CGI are still unbelivably top notch and hold up well enough.
- Interesting portions of the first part have been retained with several cuts. Looks like Rajamouli and team took negative feedback for first part seriously, as they have heavily chopped off Tamannaah's role and her portions. in a way, this slightly undermines the motivation for Sivudu to Baahubali journey but second half makes up for it.
- Heavy Drama from the second part has been retained and it gives us a feeling of watching full story. While there are a few jumps to keep runtime crisp, the dramatic portions are so well-executed that they hold up even now.
- Performances of major characters shine through better in this one part, especially, Rana Daggubati's menacing performance feels super coherent. Prabhas variations as Sivudu and Baahubali shine out even more brightly.
- Music seems to have been re-worked at places to not seem like a jump but at places it does feel so. Still, MM Keeravani, Kaala Bhairava did their best to retain all the crowd favorites BGMs with a small tweaks here and there.
- A new scene has been added for the first portion and it would definitely give goosebumps.
A little undermining aspects:
- For a re-release, we don't have to look through microscope but it is our duty to share this feedback as well.
- First Half of the film feels heavily chopped and some highly crowd favorite portions lose their sheen. The breathing space for moments to linger and register goes missing. Still, the war portions and character establishment scenes do work but there are heavy jumps and voice overs in this half. Certain moments that shocked audiences have also been chopped off in favor of second half length.
- Action sequences did suffer most of the brunt and they have been heavily trimmed. People who might have loved several fights dearly, might feel the absence of those portions.
- Manohari and Mamathala Thalli songs have huge number of fans and them being removed might not be digested by audiences who love them.
Overall Impact:
Rajamouli's vision to bring Baahubali as two part film is now more understandable after looking at them being brought as one film. It could even be the sense of watching extended versions of both halves as two big films might also be causing this, but as one film, while it still works big time, it does have some glaring gaps in narrative. Maybe from the first day onwards had the makers thought of making it as only one part and concising all the detailing, today, our way of experiencing the movie might be different.
Having said that, Baahubali The Epic, certainly showcases the vision of the makers to bring such a story to life. It is about taking Indian Film to Hollywood standards and the movie achieved it without any doubt. Had the jumps been taken care off in much better way in the first half, the movie's impact would have been double. If want to experience Baahubali as one film, this is the best version that is on offer and grab your seats ready for a 3 hours 45 minute ride that never feels tiring.
Bottomline:
A Monumental Effort that stands test of time.
