Vijay's wife Sangeetha withdraws divorce petition

Aug 7, 2026 5:23PM

In a significant development in one of the most talked-about celebrity legal cases of the year, Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay, has reportedly withdrawn the divorce petition she had filed against him before the Chengalpattu Family Court. The move brings the current legal proceedings to an end, months after the case attracted widespread attention across the country.

The divorce petition, filed earlier this year, had alleged adultery, mental cruelty and emotional neglect, leading to intense media coverage and speculation surrounding the couple's nearly three-decade-long marriage. The matter had gone through multiple adjournments, with the latest hearing scheduled for August 7 after the court deferred proceedings in June.

During Friday's hearing, Sangeetha reportedly informed the court through a video conference that she did not wish to continue with the proceedings, following which the petition was withdrawn. However, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has issued an official public statement explaining the decision or commenting on the future of their relationship.

The withdrawal has naturally sparked fresh speculation on social media, with many wondering whether the couple has reconciled or reached an out-of-court understanding. As of now, there is no official confirmation supporting either possibility, and the reasons behind the decision remain private.

Vijay and Sangeetha married in 1999 and have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha. Their marriage had long been regarded as one of the most private and enduring relationships in the South Indian film industry before reports of marital discord surfaced earlier this year. With the petition now withdrawn, the legal battle has come to a close, while the couple has chosen to remain silent on the matter.
