The much-awaited sequel to Priyadarshan's 2006 comedy entertainer Malamaal Weekly is heading for a major change behind the camera. The original film's director has confirmed that he will not be returning for the second instalment, making it clear that he has decided against directing sequels. "I am not doing it. I have decided not to do any sequel," Priyadarshan told Variety India, putting an end to speculation about his involvement.
With Priyadarshan stepping away, the makers have brought Amit Joshi on board to direct Malamaal Weekly 2. Amit, who co-directed Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, will be taking charge of the comic caper. The filmmaker has also worked as a writer on films like Trapped, Panga and India Lockdown. The makers are reportedly confident about his ability to retain the humour and madness associated with the original.

Released in 2006, Malamaal Weekly featured Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Arbaaz Khan and Asrani. The film revolved around a lottery ticket and the chaos that follows a village's unexpected brush with fortune. While Paresh Rawal has confirmed his participation in the sequel, Riteish Deshmukh's involvement remains uncertain, with reports suggesting he has also opted out.
The sequel is expected to retain the small-town setting and comic spirit of the original while introducing a fresh storyline. With a new director taking the franchise forward, it remains to be seen whether Malamaal Weekly 2 can recreate the madness that made the first film a box-office success.
