Raju Jeyamohan became a highly popular TV star with his stint on Bigg Boss Tamil. He hosted few TV shows and performed in films like Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma, Murungakkai Chips,Don. Now, he debuted as main lead with Bun Butter Jam and the movie released in Telugu on 22nd August, post its Tamil release, last month.

Plot:
Chandru (Raju Jeyamohan) is a reckless stundent highly pampered by his mother Lalitha (Saranya Ponvannan). He passes out in Intermediate and looks to join Engineering college. But his mother Lalitha, is already worried about his marriage and she wants to be a love-arranged one. She meets Uma (Devadarshini) at a wedding, who is introduced to her by her husband Kumar (Charle). Well, both the women discuss about their children.

Uma wants her daughter Madhumitha (Aadhiya Prasad) to marry a decent one. So, the two women conspire to introduce their children to each other and make it love-arranged marriage. But Chandru falls in love with Nandini (Bhavya Trika) who wants to become an influencer. Even Madhumita has a love interest Akash (VJ Pappu). Will the mothers' plan workout? What will they do and to what extent will they go to achieve their motto? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis:
Raju Jeyamohan is good in Chandru role and he is able to convey the emotional journey of the character well. Bhavya Trika as Nandhini got a glamor mixed Gen-Z girl role and she did well, too. Aadhiya Prasad and VJ Pappu evoke laughs until the climax portion. They did pull off their roles with good chemistry and comic timing. But the film lacks in consistent tone as the comedy feels a little bit forced in the first hour.

While Saranya and Devadarshini performed brilliantly, their roles seem too loud and indifferent to real life moms. Trying to play over possessive and highly manipulative mother figures, both of them did their job well but the writing did not do enough justice to their capabilities. It feels like a tad bit too stretched in the first hour in projecting them as such.

The second hour does bring central conflicts into the play but the writing again swings between being impulsive and matured. The narrative needed to be either catch an over-the-top tone consistently or be matured. It tries to be both and most of the jokes don't land. Still, the movie engages with timely big punches and comic reliefs. Raghav Mirdath needed to stick to Rajesh M's formula of nothing being too serious, so that, the comical tone would have consistent.

The second hour has moments that stick out above the rest with emotional climax being a homerun. All-in-all, we can say that the movie has several bumps but some laugh-out-loud moments that makes it watchable. Bun Butter Jam could have been much better but it ends up being an engaging flick to an extent. The Telugu dubbing quality is undermining too, as songs feel odd to the ear.

Bottomline:
Bun Butter Jam could have better but engages with good moments.

Rating: 2.75/5
