DC Comics have tried to build on momentum created by Christopher Nolan with Dark Knight trilogy to create DCEU and fight with Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU. But Zack Snyder could not deliver on Man of Steel, Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Justice League did not work as anticipated. Aquaman, Wonder Woman worked big time but their sequels did not work and hence, they brought in James Gunn to revamp. He directed and produced Superman as first one from new DCU. Let's discuss about the movie in detail.
Plot:
Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) hates Superman (David Corenswet), who has been saving people from major calamities over past 3 years. He has announced himself and Lex wants to hurt him and eliminate him. He creates a huge military problem between Jahranpur and Borovan borders. He plans to blame Superman and even on social media negativity against him, increases. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) his girlfriend tries to understand what he is going through with all this. How Superman will overcome this obstacle by Lex? What more challenges he created for him? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
David Corenswet looks good as Superman but he doesn't get much to perform as per stunts or in emotional scenes. While there are sequences that talk about his relationship with humans, human family, love and people, James Gunn doesn't give him that space to really explore his full potential as an actor. Still, he makes an impression and Rachel Brosnahan did well. Nicholas Hault did his best to make sense of Lex Luthor character but it is not well defined.
James Gunn's quirky humor sense worked well in Guardians of Galaxy films has the characters have in-built quirkiness and goofiness. But Superman is more serious as a character and more powerful. We have seen Superman taking on huge challenges rather than just political issues on Earth. This political issue seems to be convoluted and not clearly defined. The Blackhole built artifically doesn't really terrorise as much as it seems impossible to create.
But in human side of the story, James Gunn is able to create some good sequences in human relationship ones. Mainly, the father and son conversation between Clark Kent and his father is well written. But other sequences just don't really stand out. It feels like an episode of a series than a film that showcases how Superman is defining himself. More or less, James Gunn seems to have gone for a safe bet where he needed the movie to at least be a watchable flick.
In writing, we don't see him trying much different from his Guardians of Galaxy films. Few sequences also seem to be a repeat from his GOG films too. Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern, Hawk Girl and others do have important sequences but they do not really leave an impact. Overall, the movie ends up being a decent flick compared to DC films from recent past. So, we can say it as a watchable film, only if you have very low expectations.
Bottomline:
This Superman doesn't fly high as he doesn't get such a platform or space.
Rating: 2.75/5
