Is Kantara Chapter 1 banned in Kerala?
Updated : Sep 10, 2025
Kantara has become a huge blockbuster Pan-India collecting more than Rs.440 crores worldwide in 2022. The prequel of the movie, Kantara Chapter 1, is set to release on 1st October, this year. Before the release, the news reports are stating that the movie has been banned in Kerala.
Due to the ongoing issue between Prithviraj Sukumaran's Prithviraj Studios, the Mayalam version distributor. and FEUOK - The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala, the film is said to be banned in the state. Going into the details, reports indicate that the distributor has asked for 55% share for 2 weeks of run.
While the normal practice is to give 50 - 55% for first week to other language dubbed films, asking 55% for 2 weeks has been the problem for FEUOK. The organisation has decided to not exhibit the film in their theatres. Currently, Prithviraj Productions team and FEUOK representatives are expected to conduct talks further.
Few trade experts and trade followers are reporting that only 300 theatres are under FEUOK and Kerala has 800 theatres in total. So, until and unless everyone decides to not show Kantara Chapter 1, it cannot be called as ban. For now, Hombale Movies have asked Prithviraj Studios to clear the issue before the release.
As Prithivraj Sukumaran accepted to work in Salaar Part-1: Ceasefire, he distributed Hombale films and releases like KGF: Chapter 2, Kantara, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and Mahavatar Narsimha films. Till date, Prithiviraj and FEUOK ironed out issues but they have to talk about Kantara Chapter 1, quite soon.
