Managing Psoriasis and your co-workers

It is a chronic skin disease of scaling and inflammation that affects adults and sometimes children also and appears equally in males and females. Psoriasis results in patches of thick, red (inflamed) skin covered with silvery scales. These patches, which are sometimes referred to as plaques, usually itch or feel sore. They most often occur on the elbows, knees, other parts of the legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet, but they can occur anywhere on the body.  There are several reasons why psoriasis occurs and sometimes it is also a hereditary factor. But the latest trend is that it is affecting people at work. Long hours in the air conditioned environment, stress and lack of sunlight and natural surroundings seems to have offset this condition among workers. The patchy and scaly skin looks a bit unpleasant and your co workers could be put off by this condition. Education people at work is the most best thing you can do for everyone at work. ->Be relaxed and let you colleagues know that psoriasis isn't contagious and let them know how it itches and inflames causing great discomfort to you.  -> Concentrate on your task which requires priority. Don’t expel you energy completely as the stress and strain can cause the rashes to inflame further. ->Stay calm and don't let negative thoughts control of you. The more positive and calm you are, the less the irritation from the disease. It is known that if you are agitated the condition also worsens with more signs of itchiness. Remove the focus off from the disease and make it a regular practice. Talk to your dermatologist for proper treatment and care and also keep yourself informed the latest cures about psoriasis. How often do you skip "Breakfast"?

Let us first understand why people skip breakfast in the first place. 1.Sometimes it is just a long-standing habit – you just never got yourself into the breakfast routine. And, since you think you have managed to get through your morning okay over a period of time, you just tell yourself you don’t really need to eat since that is your habit. 2.Maybe you are not hungry in the morning because you routinely eat an exhaustive dinner and also snack all night until bedtime. 3.Maybe you simply don’t like breakfast food or you just rely on a cup of strong tea/coffee to get you going. 4.May be you don't have enough time in the morning to plan, prepare and eat breakfast food. What may not know is that a strong connection has been discovered between breakfast and many health-related problems! You would have expended energy yesterday when you were awake and your body used the building materials at night to regenerate itself. In addition, your body has also expended 1 litre of water during the night through breathing and sweating, as well as your visit to the bathroom. So your body wakes up “empty” in the morning and, for its trillions of cells, it begs you, “please give me back all the nutrients, energy and water I have expended in the last 24 hours.” You will also lack the mental and physical energy you need to get through your workday without a breakfast as body can't run without required fuel. Not only that, the breakfast habit is associated with better weight management and a better diet overall. So think thrice when ever you may want to skip breakfast for any of the 4 reasons above. Happy Feet

One of the most neglected parts of the body both by men and women are the feet. These pair of natural shoes walk, run skip, and jump apart from bearing your gait and weight, but don’t get the actual care they deserve. They are prone to bad smell, cracked heels, ingrown toe nails and calluses which need proper treatment and care. It’s time to pamper those feet and set a regime to keep them happy.   Washing A routine which was a part of our daily life since school should be continues into adulthood too. Wash your feet after coming home from work or outside every day. Dry with a towel and in between the toes.   Scrubbing Exfoliate your feet once a week to remove the dead skin on the heel and toes. You could use the scrubs available in the market or make one at home using sea salt and sugar and an oil like coconut, olive or almond oil for smooth and supple feet.   Moisturising Rub in a moisturiser which contains cocoa butter as a night routine. This should be done irrespective whether it’s summer or winter. You get good creams with Vitamin E and aloe vera in the markets  which work as excellent moisturizers.   Cracked Heels For those with cracked feet, it’s important to clean your feet and apply a good medicated cream in the cracks. This should be done in the night and after you apply it wear socks so that it doesn’t spread on the bed.   Ingrown toe nails These are extremely painful and have to be treated with care. You can check with your salonist and they will carefully cut the nail straight and prevent it from growing inwards. This is a periodic process till it stops bothering you.   Calluses Calluses form because of dry skin or too much friction on one area of the skin. You need to periodically scrub your feet with a good scrub and pumice stone to remove the dead skin. After the scrubbing it is important to apply a good foot cream for moisturizing.   Corns Corns are formed due to a buildup of dead skin with a hard center core that develops on or between your toes due to repeated friction or pressure. It is best to buy medication which contain salicylic acid for corn removal from the pharmacy or do what the physician suggests if it is too hard to remove.    Comfortable shoes Buy the right shoe that fits right. Not too tight and not too loose so that you don’t end up with ingrown toe nails or corns or blisters and sore feet. Avoid stilettos and hard footwear. And for the men, buy soft cotton socks for better sweat absorption and fresh feet.   Pedicure Now this is the best part.Invest in a good pedicure at least once every month. This way you can relax and have someone do the job of cleaning your feet .This can also be done at home using a small tub of warm soapy water and scrubber/pumice stone  to scour away the feet.   You could also try other treatments like foot reflexology, hot stone therapy and other exotic treatments for the spa experience!

Grapes and Brain Health

Fresh grapes of all colors -- red, green and black – are classically beautiful and a pleasure to eat. But there is more to grapes just being a natural mix of antioxidants that help support a healthy heart and may offer an array of other health benefits. The humble grapes which were sour to the fox are also known to benefit your brain. Studies have shown that grapes or grape constituents may help protect brain health by offsetting oxidative stress and inflammation, or by targeting the actions of certain genes involved in diseases of the brain, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease as shown in preliminary laboratory studies. A study of aging mice that were either consuming a diet with or without grapes, found that the grape-enriched diet was able to dramatically increase the expression of critical target genes that block the Alzheimer's pathway and decrease inflammation in the brain. [Klein, et al. presented at Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, 2007]   Resveratrol has been shown to block the actions of beta amyloid peptide, a key protein that promotes the development of Alzheimer's. [Savaskan, et. al, 2003; Marambaud et al, 2005] and  Resveratrol and other antioxidants protects the  Parkinson's-like nerve cells against oxidative damage. [Frankel D and Schipper HM, 1999]. And the other aspect about grapes is that it contains no fat, almost no sodium and are low in fat and contains potassium. And not to forget they taste good, are widely available and maintain their fresh, crispy goodness longer than most other fruit.

Heard anyone in your circle with Calcium deficiency?

When it comes to bone health, calcium is the first thing that comes to anyone’s mind. Are you aware that a sizable population today suffers from calcium deficiency related issues? And, despite the fact that there are many plant based foods that have more calcium than milk, the only solution people are generally being offered, unfortunately, is a glass of milk and calcium supplements. But despite this solution people continue to complain of calcium deficiency and most often osteoporosis kind of diseases are still not controlled. India which is reported to be high in milk / diary products consumption in that case should have very low calcium related health ailments reported. But the reality today is some thing else. Pregnant women, lactating mothers, growing teens, those suffering from bone related diseases, middle aged people, senior citizens and those in their early thirties and even one year old babies - all have been reporting calcium deficiency! So instead of just the milk intake, one should be worried about the diet and lifestyle changes that can minimize calcium loss and maximize its absorption. As stated earlier there are plenty of calcium rich plant based foods such as all legumes, peas, lentils, leafy greens, tofu, Ragi, seeds like sesame or flax, etc. that can be included in daily diet. Also Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium absorption and reducing urinary calcium losses via kidneys. Most people today find themselves deficient in this vitamin because of lack of proper exposure to sunlight. Many times, addressing the vitamin D deficiency solves problems like joint pain. Unfortunately, no amount of fortification of foods can provide an adequate quantity of vitamin D, hence people need to depend on either sunlight or supplements.
