After MGR, NTR it is Vijay: Not an overnight Miracle

May 04, 2026

Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing a monumental shift today. Defying seasoned pollsters, Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections. Fueled by anti-incumbency against the DMK and a leadership vacuum within the AIADMK, Vijay has shattered all estimations. However, while riding a massive wave of public support, TVK still requires the backing of an established party to form the government, indicating a powerful yet fractured mandate.

Observers naturally equate this momentum to the iconic rises of M.G. Ramachandran and N.T. Rama Rao, but their historical paths were distinctly different. MGR actively worked alongside the DMK from the early 1950s, using his cinematic appeal to help the Dravidian movement gain steam. Only after being ousted did he launch the AIADMK, securing power in 1977. Similarly, NTR capitalized on a lack of strong opposition to the Congress in the 1980s. Both secured straightforward, independent victories, unlike Vijay's current coalition-dependent reality.

While this electoral debut appears like a sudden tsunami, it is the result of silent preparation. As his father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, confirmed, the foundation was laid over 25 years ago with the original launch of the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI) fan network. Furthermore, the severe hurdles his films faced—starting notably with the release issues of Thalaivaa—and his firm stance against the BJP built a public narrative of a leader consistently targeted by the establishment. Through politically charged films since Kaththi, Vijay systematically communicated his core ideology to the masses.

Actors like Vijayakanth and Kamal Haasan lacked this decades-long ground preparation, and their political ambitions ultimately struggled against the towering, dominant leadership of M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa. While Rajinikanth hesitated to navigate that formidable era, Vijay intelligently capitalized on their absence and the current leadership vacuum to execute his master plan. Still, today, the spotlight belongs entirely to TVK and Vijay.
