In a major relief to the Tamil film exhibition sector, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has officially granted theatres the permission to schedule five shows a day for new movie releases. This decision comes shortly after a meeting on May 16 between the Chief Minister and key representatives from the Tamil film industry.
Under the previous guidelines, which date back to the Tamil Cinema Regulation Rules of 1957, cinema halls were strictly limited to screening four shows daily. A fifth special show was only permitted on government or festive holidays. Getting approval for that extra show was also a tedious process, requiring clearance from the District Collector or the Commissioner of Police, depending on the region.
The new directive completely streamlines this process. Any newly released Tamil film can now automatically have five daily shows for the first seven days of its theatrical run. Additionally, theatres can freely schedule five shows during all weekends and government holidays.
The most significant update is that cinema owners no longer need to chase local authorities for special permissions to run these extra screenings. This much-anticipated move is expected to heavily boost initial box office collections and help theatres easily accommodate massive opening weekend crowds.
