Tamil Cinema to witness a huge crisis

Aug 22, 2026 5:34PM

Tamil cinema is heading towards a potential release freeze from September 1, with the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA) deciding not to release new Tamil films in theatres if the ongoing OTT window dispute remains unresolved. The decision follows a fresh escalation between producer bodies and the Tamil Nadu theatre owners and distributors' associations.

The core issue is the demand for an eight-week theatrical window. Theatre owners and distributors have decided that films releasing from September 1 should be allowed to premiere on OTT only after eight weeks, and producers must provide a written commitment to that effect. Producers have opposed the condition, arguing that it was imposed without proper consultation.

The producers' associations have now taken a stronger stand, announcing that new releases, along with shooting and post-production activities, will be halted from September 1. They have also pointed out that such an eight-week mandate is not being followed in the same manner across the other southern industries.

The producers are expected to take the matter to the Tamil Nadu government and seek intervention. With several films lined up for September, the dispute could seriously disrupt the Tamil theatrical calendar if no settlement is reached before the deadline.
