Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane have supported many young filmmakers to get their first big break into the film industry. They have now helped Gaurav Dhingra, Karan Tejpal to execute a simple script into a film. The movie Stolen has done well at the festival circuit and now, it is released on Amazon Prime Video for streaming. Let's discuss about this limited budget movie in detail.
Plot:
Raman Bansal (Shubham Vardhan) gets accused by a Bengali poor woman Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer) at the railway station about kidnapping her child Champa (Baby Tanya). He proves to the police that he is not involved in the kidnapping but becomes the witness as he did she a woman running away with a baby. His elder brother Gautam Bansal (Abhishek Banerjee) tries to use his money to save his brother from the ruckus. But Raman decides to help Jhumpa and they have to fight an entire village. Why? Can they be victorious? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
The movie starts off with an interesting premise and it keeps involving us into the nitty gritties of the plot. Consistently, the plot keeps moving towards the final destination without dragging too much. The characters written appear to be very real and also, the screenplay and narrative don't go haywire with unrealistic imagination. Everything stays simple, real and believable, even though it is trying to narrate about a superficial situation.
Also, the camera work tries to put us in that situation rather than trying to showcase some glossy frames. The background score and sound effects help the makers achieve the lived-in feel and pacing at some places did get effected. Still, technically the movie is a strong attempt from the makers. Performances wise Abhishek Banerjee, Shubham Vardhan, Mia Maelzer steal the show. They make us believe in the happenings one after another.
While the direction and story is good, the writing doesn't offer some important details that the story needed in the second hour. The movie also fails to explore the reasoning behind the village being so ruthless. While the tension is palpable and well executed, it needed more stakes for us to feel immersed. Overall, the movie is watchable because of the performances and techncial brilliance.
Bottomline:
The movie is watchable and provides a reasonable viewing experience.
Rating: 2.75/5
