Peddi: Janhvi Kapoor says she was at fault too

Oct 29, 2026 4:07PM

Janhvi Kapoor has finally opened up about the controversy surrounding her portrayal in Ram Charan’s Peddi, admitting that she could have been more vigilant and raised her objections more strongly. Speaking on Koffee With Karan Season 9 alongside Varun Dhawan, the actress acknowledged that the film’s portrayal of her character, Achiyamma, was problematic and raised concerns about the objectification of women and the depiction of sexual assault.

Janhvi said she was initially hesitant to address the issue because several people had worked hard on the film. However, she admitted that the narrative’s potential negative impact on society continued to weigh on her conscience.

“Could I have done more? Could I have been more vigilant? Could I have made a bigger scene? A hundred per cent, yes,” she said, acknowledging that the portrayal involved extreme objectification and problematic treatment of sexual assault. She described the experience as “violating” and said she would carry the shame of the controversy with her.

The actress also explained the challenges of raising objections on a film set, pointing out that actors are often expected to follow the director’s instructions and that scripts do not always contain detailed camera angles. She took responsibility for her part in the controversy but said she should have used her privileged position to speak up more forcefully.

Janhvi further revealed that she had attempted to express her discomfort during filming and post-production. The controversy erupted after audiences criticised the presentation of Achiyamma, particularly the sexualised visuals and scenes that raised questions about consent.

Director Buchi Babu Sana subsequently apologised to viewers who felt uncomfortable with the portrayal and announced changes to the contentious portions. Janhvi now hopes the experience will encourage filmmakers to reconsider how female characters are presented on screen, so that actresses who voice discomfort are taken seriously rather than made to feel unprofessional.
