Suriya’s newly released action drama Karuppu is currently having a strong run at the box office, but a recent controversy has suddenly grabbed the spotlight. The issue stems from a specific scene in the film where an iconic Ilaiyaraaja song is played in the background. Reacting to the music, RJ Balaji’s character mockingly asks if the copyright for the song was officially cleared, joking that the veteran composer might file a legal case otherwise.
As a director and actor, RJ Balaji is well-known for his signature style of blending current social trends and viral news into his comedies. While his tendency to crack jokes on public issues usually entertains the audience, this direct satirical dig at Ilaiyaraaja’s real-life copyright disputes did not land well.

Fans immediately took to social media to express their severe disappointment, calling the remark highly offensive and disrespectful to the legendary musician. Also, some trolling the musician using the remarks and this further offended him. Seeing the growing backlash and trolls, the production house Dream Warrior Pictures quickly issued an official apology.
In their public note, they expressed deep admiration for Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema. The makers clarified that the dialogue was only part of a broader satirical context and was never meant as a personal attack. Valuing his sentiments, the team officially announced they will remove or modify the controversial dialogue in all future versions of the film.
