Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki passes away

Aug 21, 2026 3:31PM

Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected names in South Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 94. The legendary actress breathed her last in Chennai on Friday, August 21, at 1:59 PM after being hospitalised following age-related health complications. The news was confirmed by Nadigar Sangam president and actor Nassar.

Janaki had been undergoing treatment at Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, and was reportedly receiving intensive medical care. Her mortal remains will be kept at Centoph Road in Teynampet from 5 PM on Friday for family, friends, colleagues and admirers to pay their last respects.

Born in Rajahmundry, Janaki entered films with the Telugu classic Shavukaru in 1950, directed by L. V. Prasad and starring N. T. Rama Rao. The film not only marked her leading-lady debut but also gave her the screen name that stayed with her for the rest of her life. Interestingly, Shavukaru was also NTR's first film as a leading hero.

From there, Janaki built an extraordinary career that crossed Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. She worked with some of the biggest stars of different generations, including NTR, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. Her Telugu filmography includes memorable films such as Kanyasulkam, Jayam Manade, Vadante Dabbu, Rechukka-Pagati Chukka, Rojulu Marayi, Doctor Chakravarthy, Akkachellellu and Manchi Kutumbam.

What made Sowcar Janaki particularly remarkable was her ability to evolve with the industry. After establishing herself as a leading actress, she seamlessly moved into character roles and continued to make an impact across generations. Her performances in films such as K. Balachander's Iru Kodugal, Edhir Neechal and other acclaimed Tamil films demonstrated the range that made her much more than a conventional heroine. She also remained relevant in Telugu cinema through films such as Samsaram Oka Chadarangam, Evade Subramanyam, Kanche, Babu Bangaram, Soubhagyam and Anni Manchi Sakunamule.

Janaki's career spanned more than seven decades and over 400 films, along with extensive work on stage and television. Her contribution to cinema was recognised with honours including the Kalaimamani and, in 2022, the Padma Shri. Her last film was the Telugu release Anni Manchi Sakunamule in 2023.

With her passing, Indian cinema has lost an actress who belonged to an entirely different generation of performers—one who began her journey in black-and-white Telugu cinema and remained visible even as the industry transformed across decades. Sowcar Janaki's name, however, is inseparable from the history of South Indian cinema, and her performances will continue to live on through generations of movie lovers.
