Varun Tej's performance is the major highlight of KK - Gandhi

With just days left for the worldwide release of Korean Kanakaraju on August 7, director Merlapaka Gandhi has opened up about the film's unique concept and why he believes Varun Tej's performance will be one of its biggest attractions. Produced by UV Creations on a grand scale, the supernatural comedy has already created strong buzz through its teaser, trailer, and chartbuster songs composed by Thaman.

Speaking about the film's origin, Gandhi revealed that the idea came from his observations of the Korean community living around the Kia factory in Anantapur. "I wondered how funny it would be if a Korean spirit possessed a local boy from Anantapur. That thought eventually became the foundation of Korean Kanakaraju," he shared.

The director said Varun Tej had to prepare extensively to portray the film's two contrasting shades. The actor underwent training to master both the Anantapur dialect and Korean language, with language coaches brought in to ensure authenticity. Gandhi also praised Varun for being deeply involved in the project from the script stage and for effortlessly transforming into two completely different personalities. "He always looks for unique concepts and sheds all traces of his previous roles. The variations in his character will surprise audiences," he said.

To give the film a fresh visual appeal, the makers shot key portions in real locations across South Korea and Kazakhstan. Gandhi revealed that despite visa challenges, the team spent nearly 20 days filming on an island in South Korea, believing that authentic locations would enhance the cinematic experience.

Apart from the supernatural comedy, Korean Kanakaraju also features a light-hearted romance with Ritika Nayak, who plays a factory worker fascinated by Korean culture. The film's comedy largely stems from the hero speaking fluent Korean after being possessed, leaving everyone around him confused while Telugu subtitles help the audience enjoy every punchline. Supported by an ensemble cast including Satya, Sunil, and Muralidhar Goud, Gandhi is confident the film will deliver non-stop entertainment and emerge as a wholesome commercial entertainer when it releases worldwide.
