After nearly a decade, Vijay Antony reunited with Pichaikkaran director Sasi for Vanda Devullu, an emotional social drama inspired by a real-life incident. With Swasika Vijay playing the central character and the makers confidently screening premieres before release, the film arrived carrying decent expectations. Let’s discuss the film in detail.

Plot:

Vasavi (Swasika Vijay) loses her husband within a few years of marriage and is left alone to raise her two sons, Bhaskar (Ajay Dheeshan) and Vivek. Despite severe financial struggles, she works multiple jobs and sacrifices everything to give her children a better future.

Years later, when her sons grow up, Vasavi develops a desire to restart her life and thinks about getting married again. But her own children strongly oppose the idea and slowly grow resentment towards her decision.

At the same time, Yedukondalu (Vijay Antony) enters the narrative with his own emotional baggage and circumstances. Is Vasavi seeking marriage for companionship and emotional fulfilment or does she want to challenge social norms? What role does Yedukondalu play in her life? The answers form the rest of Vanda Devullu.

Analysis:

The strongest aspect of the film is its central idea — questioning why society still expects widowed women to sacrifice their entire lives after losing their partners. It is a relevant and necessary discussion for contemporary audiences.

Director Sasi succeeds in making us emotionally invest in Vasavi’s journey, especially during the first half where her struggles and daily survival create empathy. A confrontation scene between Vasavi and her elder son after the topic of remarriage comes up stands out emotionally. The bride-seeing episode and YouTube content portions add some much-needed lighter moments.

However, the screenplay doesn’t fully extract the emotional potential of all its characters. Certain relationships deserved deeper establishment and the interval twist doesn’t leave the intended impact.

The second half works better with the entry of Vijay Antony’s character. His scenes with Swasika bring warmth and momentum to the narrative. The pre-climax and final twenty minutes deliver the strongest emotional payoff and leave audiences with something to think about.

Swasika Vijay is undoubtedly the backbone of the film. She performs the role of a widow and mother with conviction and emotional maturity. Vijay Antony leaves a strong impression despite limited screen presence. Ajay Dheeshan also delivers a grounded performance. Music, cinematography and production values support the emotional mood effectively.

Positives:

Swasika Vijay’s performance

Core social theme

Second Half

Pre-climax and Climax

Music and emotional moments

Negatives:

Some underdeveloped character arcs

First Half pacing issues

Interval twist lacks impact

Bottomline: Emotional Drama Powered By Swasika’s Performance

Rating: 2.5/5
