Legendary director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao doesn't need an introduction but for people who don't know his filmography - he is the director of films like Pushpak, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madana Kama Raju, Mayuri, Brindavanam, Bhairavadweepam, Aditya 369, Raja Paarvai/ Amavasya Chandrudu, and many more. He is renowned for innovation and at 94, he has come up with Sing Geetham, a musical fantasy movie. Nag Ashwin produced the film and let's discuss about it in detail.
Plot:
Pratap (Ayaan) is released from Bhopal Jail and he is reluctant to go as he needs to pay off his debts. Poverty makes him a selfish person but he finds out that his father (Rahul Ravindran) and his mother Shailajamma (Nivetha Pethuraj) own gold mines in their hometown, Kuberapuram. He decides to sell them off and make money but he finds resistance in environmentalist Gauri (Ahilya) and he needs to team up with capitalist Renu (Shalini Kondepudi) to see the deal through.
Pratap decides to cut off the last tree standing which Gauri makes it into her home. They cut it down to mine for gold and he even uses dynamite to finally find some as the old mines have been mined so much that no gold is left anywhere. The village worships Kubera and Lakshmi and think gold is their boon. Unable to see such selfishness, Gauri scolds Kubera idol and falls into a cave behind it. She expresses her frustration and God curses the villagers to not talk but sing. What happens next? Watch the film to know more.
Analysis:
Singeetham Srinivasa Rao has time and again proved that his story telling abilities, creating unique premises are world-class. Like Martin Scorsese, he is ready to work even at this age and that is a salute. He is not just making some films but he is bringing something fresh to the table and putting in all the hardwork to realise them on big screens. Sing Geetham is another great example of his penchant to create and bring great stories, novel cinematic experiences.
With Nag Ashwin as his able aide, he delivered a very different cinematic experience for Indian Screen where it is not a musical but everyone is forced to sing and communicate which makes even normal conversations into songs. Devi Sri Prasad aided the great man very well in making this idea plausible. Each song is choreographed and composed to the situation, perfectly. His background score also benefits the film.
Few conversations appear a little bit draggy or forced for the effect but as a film, it leaves such an impact that we are left praising the attempt. Ayaan, Ahilya and Shalini did their best to sell this premise and their performances are decent enough. While the story's soul and purpose are commendable, it slightly feels like a Chandamama story being brought to screen. There the movie needed a little bit more grounded approach but for the attempt and pulling it off so well, we have to credit the makers.
Just for Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and the main important social message, he brings to the forefront without trying to preaching, this film deserves to be experienced in theatres at least once. It would have been great had it been so good that you're left spellbound but the legendary filmmaker did not give a chance to question the ambition or make the attempt feel like a gimmick to sell a story.
Positives:
Performances
Musical background
Attempt
Innovative and Creative premise
Strong Climax
Singeetham's dedication
Negatives:
Feels too Chandamama Story style narrative
Could've been better in the middle portions
Rating: We cannot give a rating to the ambition, and inspiration that Singeetham brings to the filmmaking.
Bottomline:
The movie is a fun and decent one-time watch and for all the people who wish to watch an unique film, we recommend it.
