Mamta Mohandas Shares Her Inspiring Battle with Cancer

Jun 22, 2026 8:25PM

Actress Mamta Mohandas delivered a powerful and deeply personal speech at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital. As a cancer survivor herself, she praised Nandamuri Balakrishna for his continued dedication to the institution and its 25-year legacy of helping patients.

During her address, Mamta addressed past rumors, clarifying that she was not diagnosed with breast cancer, but rather Refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma—a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer. She spoke about her gruelling journey, which included extensive chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. When standard treatments failed, a 2014 clinical trial in the United States for the drug Opdivo saved her life.

Mamta shared a profound shift in her perspective, explaining that she no longer focuses on the elusive concept of a "cure." Instead, she concentrates on daily survival, mental resilience, and making the most of her life. She also highlighted a crucial gap in Indian medical care, noting the absence of routine "Quality of Life Assessments" that are standard in the US to monitor a patient's emotional well-being.

She had a strong message for families of cancer patients: empathize, don't just sympathize. She warned against the "toxic support" of caregivers constantly showing their worry, as patients need strength and positivity from their homes. Mamta concluded by rejecting the notion that cancer survivors are fragile, stating that the battle makes them incredibly strong, and she urged society to offer genuine love and support to make every patient's fight a little easier.
