AR Rahman satirically dismisses anti national remarks

Jun 18, 2026 3:16PM

Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga has found itself at the centre of an unexpected online debate despite positive reception. A section of social media criticised the film’s portrayal and accused it of being “anti-national” for presenting Pakistani characters without reducing them to familiar political stereotypes.

Reacting to the discussion, AR Rahman chose not to issue a long clarification. Instead, the composer responded to a viral satirical post and highlighted a line that quickly became the talking point: “There can be normal humans in Pakistan.” He accompanied the reaction with a laughing emoji, making his stance clear without directly entering the argument.

The post itself mocked how some viewers expected a spy thriller or a revenge narrative and were surprised to find an emotional, human story instead. It jokingly suggested that simply showing ordinary people across the border had become controversial enough to trigger accusations online.

Interestingly, the conversation around Main Vaapas Aaunga is not centred on its craft or performances but on interpretation. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film appears to approach Partition and cross-border emotions through personal stories rather than political messaging.

Rahman’s reaction has now shifted attention back to that larger point — whether audiences can separate governments from people and allow cinema to explore human experiences without immediately reading them as political positions.
