Sing Geetham is not just a musical - Nag Ashwin

Jun 11, 2026 5:22PM

Ahead of the release of Sing Geetham, producer-director Nag Ashwin spoke about what drew him towards backing the project and why he believes it stands apart from conventional musical films.

Interestingly, Nag Ashwin revealed that his initial plan was to collaborate with veteran filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao on a sequel to Aditya 369. But during several conversations, Singeetham repeatedly brought back this story and eventually convinced the team to take it forward.

Nag Ashwin stressed that the film was not produced simply as a tribute to the legendary filmmaker. According to him, the decision came from the material itself — the unusual narrative structure and the opportunity to attempt something different on screen. He described Sing Geetham as a film that may not be made repeatedly and called it a rare cinematic exercise.

Talking about the filmmaking process, he said the film does not follow the familiar format of scenes leading into songs. Instead, music and dialogue move together as part of the storytelling. He revealed that Devi Sri Prasad worked extensively in pre-production, with rehearsals and recordings happening before the shoot, while Singeetham closely supervised the execution.

Nag Ashwin also pointed out that despite being 94, Singeetham’s energy and curiosity remained unchanged. More than the technical side or musical structure, he said what stayed with him was the emotional core of the story and believes that will become the film’s biggest takeaway for audiences.
