Korean Kanakaraju recovers most of the budget

Jul 24, 2026 1:01PM

Varun Tej's upcoming horror comedy Korean Kanakaraju appears to have scored its first big victory even before hitting theatres. The film has reportedly generated an impressive Rs. 26 crore through its non-theatrical rights, putting the makers in a comfortable position ahead of its worldwide release on August 7.

Trade circles suggest the film has been mounted on a budget of around Rs. 38 crore, meaning the production has already recovered a significant portion of its investment through satellite, digital and other non-theatrical deals. This has reportedly strengthened the film's market value, with distributors showing increased interest in acquiring theatrical rights across territories.

The buzz surrounding the film has steadily grown ever since its promotional campaign began. The teaser and songs have received a positive response online, while Varun Tej's makeover has become one of the biggest talking points. The actor will be seen in two contrasting avatars—a Rayalaseema youngster and a Korean mob boss—in what is being promoted as a cross-cultural horror comedy.

Directed by Merlapaka Gandhi and produced by UV Creations, the film also banks heavily on the comic chemistry between Varun Tej and Satya. With the non-theatrical business already placing the project in a financially secure position, all eyes are now on its theatrical performance. If the current momentum translates into box office numbers, Korean Kanakaraju could emerge as one of the profitable ventures in Varun Tej's career.
