Kamal Haasan’s association with Singeetham Srinivasa Rao was far more than that of an actor and director. On Sunday, following the legendary filmmaker’s demise, Kamal visited Singeetham’s residence in Chennai and paid his last respects to the man he has long regarded as a guru, mentor and one of his closest creative collaborator.

Their extraordinary journey began with Sommokadidhi Sokokadidhi in 1979 and continued through Raja Paarvai, Pushpaka Vimana, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Kaathala Kaathala and Mumbai Xpress. Across these films, the duo moved effortlessly between romance, comedy, fantasy, visual experimentation, emotional drama and outright cinematic madness. Their collaboration is consequently regarded as one of the most distinctive actor-director partnerships in Indian cinema.

Kamal’s admiration for Singeetham was also evident in Apoorva Singeetham, a special retrospective series created by Raaj Kamal Films International. Through the YouTube show, Kamal revisited their films and celebrated the filmmaker’s extraordinary imagination, including dedicated episodes on Raja Paarvai and Pushpak.

Kamal has repeatedly spoken of Singeetham as someone who remained creatively young regardless of age. In his latest tribute, he wrote that he was among the friends and disciples who had walked alongside Singeetham, adding, “Dying young need not be a tragedy. It can be glorious. Singeetham Srinivasa Rao is a great example. I have admired him since I knew him. Now I aspire to live like he did.”

Their body of work stands as a rare example of an actor and filmmaker constantly challenging each other—and producing classics across remarkably different genres.
