How To Train Your Dragon films became highly successful in animated form. Each film took the relationship between a boy from the clan who fears Dragons and swore to fight them and an outcast handicapped Dragon to a new height warming our heart. Now, Live-action form of the story has released now in theatres and let's see how good this version plays out and discuss about it.

Plot:

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Mason Thames) finds himself as weak to take over his father Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler)'s legacy as Berk chieftain. He is unable to fight a dragon which always attack their kingdom. He is good at buliding mechanical parts and finds a rare dragon, Night Fury and its handicapped. Just like him, it is also cast out and he starts to become its friend and showcases to Berk clan that Dragons can be made pets and friends marking his own legacy.

Analysis:

Disney started the live-action remakes to cult animated features to see how the new audiences would turn up to the classic fables. Their The Lion King, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin worked but Mulan, Snow White did not become as successful. Taking an inspiration from their experience, How To Train Your Dragon live action movies have been commissioned while the animated features have been memorable. And this doesn't work as much as the animated one.

While in animation, it became slightly easy to relate to the characters, the live action versions lacked the similar cohesiveness. Also, the same story being narrated in similar manner with just other actors also makes it a little too tedious and familiar. The excitement of watching something fresh is lost and even the additions to the story don't really come together.

The visuals are good but the performances are too over-the-top to make them feel real. The look and VFX, technical aspects did a perfect job yet you don't feel the same excitement to watch the live action drama. Mason Thames stands out looking close to animated character but none of the others make their mark. Maybe some films don't really deserve to be in live action as their animated versions have an innocence and quality to live through ages.

Bottomline:

Doesn't live up to the animated features and it feels a little letdown in this real life version.

Rating: 2/5
