SS Rajamouli’s recent comments about Suriya in Chennai have once again set the rumour mill working overtime. At the Don’t Trouble The Trouble event, Rajamouli was asked about a possible film with Suriya and said he has always wanted to work with the actor. He added that whenever they get an opportunity to collaborate, it would be “really special.” The comment was enough for several reports to start claiming that Suriya could be Rajamouli’s next hero.

However, there is no such confirmation from Rajamouli or his team. In fact, people close to the filmmaker have denied any development on his next project and maintain that Rajamouli’s complete focus is currently on Varanasi. The timing is important as well. Mahesh Babu completed his portions of the film on September 22 after a long shooting journey, while Rajamouli is now pushing the remaining work and post-production towards completion.

Rajamouli is not known for locking his next film in a hurry, particularly after committing several years to a project of the scale of Varanasi. The film began taking shape after RRR, and the director has spent years developing and executing this globetrotting adventure. With Varanasi scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, his immediate priority is to finish the film, complete its extensive VFX and post-production work and ensure that it reaches the global audience at the scale he has envisioned.

This has not stopped speculation about what comes next. Suriya’s name is now being pushed alongside Rajamouli’s future plans, while completely unconfirmed reports continue to circulate about projects such as Baahubali 3, RRR 2 and Mahabharata. Rajamouli himself has not announced any of these as his next directorial ventures. His response in Chennai was also carefully worded: he said that if he talks about himself and Suriya, that would become the headline and take the attention away from Don’t Trouble The Trouble.

For now, the confirmed Rajamouli project remains Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha. The film is being produced by KL Narayana and SS Karthikeya, with MM Keeravani handling the music. With Mahesh now completing his shooting portions and the film moving towards its final stages, Rajamouli is expected to remain focused on Varanasi rather than rushing into an announcement about his next film.
