TFI release issues: Varanasi too postponed?

Oct 18, 2026 1:16PM

Telugu Film Industry is once again heading towards a phase of release date reshuffles, with reports suggesting that Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi might be postponed from its planned April 7, 2027 release. If the reports turn out to be true, the development could trigger a fresh round of changes to the release calendar, with several big-budget and medium-budget films potentially reconsidering their dates.

Varanasi has been positioned as one of the biggest releases of 2027, with the Ugadi holiday window expected to give the film a major theatrical opening. However, reports suggesting that the film might not arrive as planned have already sparked discussions about which film could occupy the April slot. Prabhas’ Fauzi, which was earlier planned for December 4, is reportedly being considered for an April release if Varanasi moves out of the window.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth’s Dharman is also said to be moving away from its earlier Pongal release plan, with reports suggesting a late-April 2027 release. Prabhas’ Spirit, on the other hand, has locked October 29, 2027, for Diwali. While these developments involve different films and release windows, they underline the uncertainty surrounding the theatrical calendar.

The bigger concern is the domino effect these changes could create. When a major film postpones, other producers who have locked dates around festivals, holidays and distribution plans may have to rethink their strategies. Medium-budget films could be particularly affected, as securing a favourable release window without facing competition from major star-driven projects is already a challenge.

TFI has seen this cycle of postponements and release date adjustments several times, and the latest reports suggest that the industry could be heading towards another such phase. If Varanasi moves away from April 7, the consequences could extend well beyond one film, forcing several other biggies and medium-budget projects to revisit their theatrical plans. For now, the reported changes remain unconfirmed by the respective makers.
