The proposed Race reboot is an unusually desperate-looking combination. Aamir Khan, Sidharth Malhotra and Tiger Shroff are reportedly in talks with producer Ramesh Taurani, with all three having heard the script, while Aamir is said to be closely involved in developing the screenplay. More importantly, Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya is attached to the project.

For Aamir, this is not merely another franchise opportunity. His reputation remains enormous, but the theatrical consistency that once seemed guaranteed has disappeared. Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha were major failures, and although Sitaare Zameen Par gave him a much-needed hit, his recent filmography has still made another strong theatrical success extremely important. Interestingly, Aamir himself recently admitted that Thugs of Hindostan was the one film he accepted more because he liked his character than the story, and acknowledged that it went badly wrong.

That brings Vijay Krishna Acharya into the spotlight. He gave Aamir one of his biggest blockbusters with Dhoom 3, but also directed Thugs of Hindostan, one of the most infamous disasters of Aamir’s career. So the director and star are once again coming together for a big commercial franchise film, almost as though both are trying to reclaim what worked once while correcting what went disastrously wrong the next time.

Sidharth Malhotra and Tiger Shroff hardly enter this equation from a position of strength either. Both need a film that can change the conversation around them, particularly in theatrical cinema. Tiger, in particular, has been attempting to rediscover the commercial momentum that made him one of Bollywood’s most dependable action stars. Putting three actors with something to prove into a franchise that itself needs rehabilitation makes the casting far more interesting than a routine star combination.

Because Race 3 already showed the limits of the franchise. Salman Khan’s presence delivered a huge opening, but the film could not sustain that momentum and became a major disappointment. The reboot now has to prove that Race can still mean slick action, twists and event cinema rather than simply functioning as a familiar brand name.

That is why the most important thing in the latest update is not Aamir, Sidharth or Tiger individually. It is the collection of people involved. Aamir needs another major theatrical winner, Sidharth and Tiger need a turnaround, and Vijay Krishna Acharya has to show that the man behind Dhoom 3 can deliver another big commercial winner after Thugs of Hindostan. Race Reboot could therefore become a career reset for several people at once—or a spectacular reminder that assembling names with something to prove does not guarantee a winning film.
