Mani Ratnam Decides To Wait For Sai Pallavi

Jun 16, 2026 5:41PM

Mani Ratnam is known for moving swiftly with his projects and rarely waiting for actors to align schedules. Over the years, the director has often changed casting plans or moved to different subjects whenever delays affected development timelines. But this time, the veteran filmmaker appears to have made an exception.

According to industry sources, Mani Ratnam has decided to wait for Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi to become available instead of reworking the project with another combination. The development has generated curiosity as it reflects the filmmaker’s confidence in the pairing and the world being developed around them.

Sai Pallavi is currently occupied with Ramayana, which has emerged as one of Indian cinema’s biggest ongoing productions and is taking up a major portion of her schedule. Vijay Sethupathi, on the other hand, is understood to have prioritised his commitment to director Kruthika Udayanidhi’s film before moving to Mani Ratnam’s project.

The decision stands out particularly because Mani Ratnam has traditionally been known to adapt quickly rather than hold projects for long periods waiting for dates. With both actors balancing packed schedules, sources suggest the filmmaker is willing to begin production only after Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi become available, making this one of the rare occasions where Mani Ratnam has chosen patience over replacing actors and moving ahead.
