Thalapathy Vijay Jana Nayagan continues to be delayed

Feb 19, 2026

Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated final film, Jana Nayagan, is now looking at a May 2026 release after a series of persistent censor hurdles and legal battles. Originally slated for a grand Pongal opening in January, the film’s journey to the big screen has been stalled by a standoff with the Central Board of Film Certification.

The delay stems from the CBFC’s decision to refer the film to a revising committee due to concerns over specific dialogues related to religious sentiments and the Indian Army. While the makers, KVN Productions, initially sought relief from the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court, they recently withdrew their writ petition on February 10th to cooperate with the board’s official review process.

But the review team is yet to watch the film and speculations of team watching the film on 20th February are also being dismissed. Hence, the movie is looking at release in May or June, only. Already, Industry insiders and international distributors, are stating that the movie won't release before April 30, 2026.

The shift to May is also strategically timed to avoid the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for March and April, as the Election Commission often monitors high-profile political films for content that could influence voters.

With director H. Vinoth at the helm, Jana Nayagan is viewed as Vijay’s cinematic swan song before his full-time entry into politics. Fans now eagerly await the revising committee's clearance for what is expected to be a massive summer blockbuster.
