Daler Mehndi has landed in a controversy after Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal confronted him during a performance at the Maa Kunjapuri Mela in Tehri Garhwal. The minister questioned the singer’s ability to perform, alleged that he was intoxicated and expressed dissatisfaction with the show. He also reportedly cited a fee of Rs.35 lakh paid for the performance.
Actor Anupam Kher came out in support of Mehndi, criticising the manner in which the singer was reprimanded publicly. Kher said he had known Mehndi for nearly three decades and suggested that health issues could have affected his performance. He also appealed to the film industry to stand by the singer.

Mika Singh, Mehndi’s younger brother, revealed that the singer had recently undergone surgery and was recovering. Kapil Sharma and Badshah have also reportedly expressed support for him. However, singer Sona Mohapatra offered a different perspective, recalling her own experience watching Mehndi perform at an earlier event. She questioned whether an artist’s stature should shield them from criticism when audiences and organisers have legitimate expectations from a live performance.
Mehndi has faced controversies before. In 2018, he was convicted in a case involving allegations of illegal immigration and sentenced to two years in prison. A Patiala court upheld his conviction in 2022. The latest row has sparked a debate over an artist’s dignity, health concerns and professional accountability. While the allegations about intoxication remain unverified, the controversy has divided opinions over whether the minister’s concerns justified confronting the singer on stage.
