Mankatha wave demolishes all re-release records

on Jan 23, 2026

Ajith Kumar’s iconic action thriller Mankatha has once again etched its name in the history books, shattering box office records with its highly anticipated re-release on January 23, 2026. Celebrating the cult status of the "Kingmaker," the film has officially recorded the highest-ever opening day pre-sales for a re-release in Tamil Nadu, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli.

The 2011 blockbuster, directed by Venkat Prabhu, saw an unprecedented surge in advance bookings, crossing the ₹2.20 crore mark in Tamil Nadu alone. This massive response reflects the enduring craze for Ajith’s stylish portrayal of the anti-hero, Vinayak Mahadevan. Fans across the state transformed cinema halls into festival grounds, celebrating with confetti, milk abhishekams, and roaring cheers to the iconic background score by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

The re-release also saw a spectacular performance in markets like Bengaluru, where it set new records for Tamil films. Trade analysts note that the film’s return was bolstered by a lack of major new releases, allowing the "Mankatha" wave to dominate the screens.

Director Venkat Prabhu shared his excitement on social media, posting nostalgic behind-the-scenes memories that further fueled the fan frenzy. Decades later, the film continues to prove that Ajith Kumar’s screen presence remains a monumental force at the box office.
