Kangana Ranaut's much-awaited Queen 2 has landed in legal trouble even before its release. Days after the sequel wrapped up shooting, Phantom Studios has reportedly moved the Bombay High Court with a Rs.250 crore lawsuit against JioStar, alleging that the film is an "unauthorised sequel" to the 2014 blockbuster Queen.
According to reports, Phantom Studios has claimed it owns a 50 percent stake in the intellectual property rights of Queen, including the rights to develop sequels and other derivative works. The studio has alleged that Queen 2 was developed without its approval despite earlier objections and legal notices issued to the concerned parties.
The sequel reunites Kangana Ranaut with director Vikas Bahl, who directed the original film. The project recently completed principal photography and is currently in post-production. However, the legal dispute could cast uncertainty over its release plans if the matter remains unresolved.
Released in 2014, Queen became one of the biggest female-led successes in Hindi cinema, earning widespread critical acclaim and winning multiple National Awards. With Queen 2 now at the centre of an intellectual property battle, the case is expected to be closely watched by the film industry, as it could determine the future of one of Bollywood's most celebrated franchises.
