AI Mahabharat garners huge negative feedback

on Nov 6, 2025

JioHotstar, the popular OTT platform, has decided to bring AI Mahabharat and it seemed like a reply to limited animated series on Netflix, Kurukshetra. But the usage of AI, to create characters and live, rich drama seems to have come across as over-ambitious for the audiences.

BR Chopra's Mahabharat has been the most loved and liked iteration of the epic and it continues to be highly popular driving lakhs of views on social media. A decade ago, Star Plus produced Mahabharat with new age actors and it became trendsetting success with Shaheer Shaikh, Sourabh Raj Jain becoming hugely popular.

Mainly, Krishna Vani with each episode in Sourabh's voice as Krishna and his portrayal have been the USP of its popularity across languages. The show gave confidence to produce other mythological shows like Suryaputra Karn, RadhaKrishn, Srimad Ramayana and several others.

Trying to capture the growing love for the epics and existing popularity, curiosity among younger generation audiences, as well, Netflix and JioHotstar have decided to bring such shows using technology. While Kurukshetra being an animated show did not really face such opposition but due to the inaccuracy and changes in story, pundits slammed it.

But AI Mahabharat is aesthetically and fundamentally looks wrong with prompts not producing active imagery that feels real. The inaccuracy has become an eye sore and each shot looks artificial to the power of infinity, say viewers. The negative feedback for first two episodes is so huge that makers might have to re-think before proceeding.

AI is at nascent level in understanding the depth of human emotions and generating imagery that looks real to the time period and genuine. So, trying to ride on a wave and be the first to explore, the makers seem to be over ambitious and slightly short-sighted in their approach.
