Pratyusha Case Verdict: SC orders Siddharth to surrender
Updated : Feb 17, 2026
In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court of India has delivered its final verdict in the long-standing death case of Telugu actress Prathyusha. The apex court upheld the previous conviction, ordering the accused, Siddharth Reddy, to surrender immediately.
The case dates back to February 23, 2002, when Prathyusha and her friend Siddharth Reddy reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison. While Prathyusha tragically passed away the following day during treatment, Siddharth recovered and was discharged weeks later. The incident sparked a massive public outcry at the time, with allegations suggesting that her death was not a suicide but a planned murder.
Responding to the gravity of the accusations, the case was handed over to the CBI. Following their investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet naming Siddharth Reddy as the prime accused for abetment of suicide. In 2004, a local sessions court sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment. However, in 2011, the High Court reduced this sentence to two years.
Both parties subsequently moved to the Supreme Court—Siddharth seeking a complete acquittal and Prathyusha’s mother, Sarojini Devi, seeking a harsher penalty. With today's ruling, the Supreme Court has brought a sense of closure to this 24-year-old mystery by affirming the High Court's judgment and demanding the immediate surrender of the accused.
