NRIs celebrate Anna Hazare’s victory and Parliament resolution

People For Lok Satta (PFL), a vibrant political nonprofit organisation in USA, organized celebrations and rejoiced the special occasion of Indian Parliament making the unanimous resolution for state-level anti-corruption ombudsmen Lokayukthas and Anna Hazare ending his 12-day fast. Members of PFL organized and participated in rallies, marches, candle light walks and protests over last few months before Indian consulates and public spaces in Houston, Boston, Bay area, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Washington DC in support of Anna Hazare and his fight against corruption.

Jawahar Kambampati, Vice President of Projects, PFL, recalled the moments he organized ‘Dandi March II’, 240 mile walk in March 2011 from San Diego to San Francisco. Jawahar said, “One of the objectives of our march was to create awareness among NRIs about anti-corruption movements happening in India. People doubted the effectiveness of we walking in US protesting against corruption in India. Jayaprakash Narayan, Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal and others encouraged us and their hindsight proved correct”. Jawahar notes the change among the Indians to fight for corruption-less society and celebrates the participation of NRIs in support of Anna Hazare.  “Our march put forth three demands -- India signing UNCAC, enacting Jan Lokpal bill and making laws to bring the black money stashed outside India. Though there is progress in our first two demands, we will continue our struggle”, he said.

Ramgopal Madarapu, President of PFL Atlanta Chapter, who led PFL’s ‘Kill Corruption’ campaign for cancelling the spectrum licenses, said “We followed every version of the Jan Lokpal bill and also the amendments proposed by Aruna Roy and Jayaprakash Narayan and created awareness among tens of thousands of people. Sravanthi Yelamachili and Suresh Ediga called all Members of Parliament seeking support for the bill”. Raghava Solipuram from Houston  requested people to support Baba Ramdev now in his fight against black money and attend Baba’s events in September in USA. Raghava led NRI protest events in Houston in co-ordination with PFL, IAC, 5th Pillar and Bharat Swambiman.

Sreekanth Kocharlakota from Los Angeles shackled himself and self-arrested in protest of Anna Hazare’s arrest and spent sleepless nights in last week to keep the NRI community up to date on Anna’s fast. “Anna Hazare made two other great things to our nation in addition to the attention drawn towards Jan Lokpal bill -- showing the power of non violence to the new generation and creating an interest in political processes and Parliament proceedings. This is in line with what PFL has been striving for. Anna Hazare should be bestowed with ‘Bharat Ratna’ for these three reasons”, Sreekanth said.  Dinesh Pagadala, Vice President of PFL Media, noted that Anna Hazare declared electoral reforms as his next agenda and hoped that Anna would consider proxy voting rights for NRIs in his plans. Finally People For Loksatta  Thanks all in making this possible and especially media for  taking the movement into people.
