Supreme Court rejects NJAC formation

The five member Supreme Court Collegium lead by Chief Justice HL Dattu rejected the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) constituted by Government of India for the appointments of judges for apex court and the high courts in the country. The apex court collegiums giving its verdict on this matter yesterday, said that it is opposing any intervention of central government in the judges appointment system. It opines the present collegium system lead by five members including CJI is capable of handling judges’ appointments and hence no need for Centre’s intervention in this system.

Centre takes initiative after seeing several instances of some judges either indulged in corrupt practices or influenced by state political parties. Madras high court witnesses such allegations some time ago. A judge of Madras high court bench alleges that his counterpart of the same court got appointed with fake LLB certificate. In this context, Centre constituted NJAC after getting Parliament approval for it. But, the Supreme Court collegium plainly rejected NJAC replacing the existing collegium system.
