Vincy Aloshious gave a sexual harassment complaint against Shine Tom Chacko stating that he danced in front of her showing his genitalia. The controversial actor booked under narcotic drug abuse had to apologise to her which gave more attention to their film, Soothravakyam. Majorly, many got interested to see if the controversy is the only highlight of the film or there is good content. The movie released now, and let's discuss about the movie in detail.
Plot:
SHO Christo Xavier (Shine Tom Chacko) runs free tution classes to 11th class students helping them to understand tough mathematical concepts. Students start to like his classes so much, they bunk school to attend his classes. Teacher Nimisha (Vincy Aloshious) gets irritated by this and complaints to him. He asks students to not bunk classes ever. His ability to connect with them despite a tough exterior makes him a local favorite. Even Nimisha starts to connect with him.
Arya (Anagha Annet), one of the students, is hit and abused by her elder brother, Vivek (Deepak Parambol), who is 12 years elder to her. She complaints about it to Nimisha and she takes it to Christo. Arya's boyfriend Akhil (Naseef) doesn't like her being bullied by her elder brother. Christo hits Vivek and asks him to not abuse Arya. But he tracks her and Akhil, when he is celebrating her birthday and hits them both, black and blue. What happens next? Why he hates her so much? What did Christo do in this situation?
Analysis:
Malayalam Industry has been able to master the class of writing engaging screenplays. They are able to make people sit through even simple films and even while executing, most of them, look to keep it real. Soothravakyam doesn't try to present things in an over-dramatic way and succeeds in sustaining interest for long time. But it drags the conclusion in the second hour and the writing feels a shady bit convenient too.
While the set-up keeps everyone engaged, the conclusion drags it out when people are able to predict the outcome. Soothrakaryam should have been able to add even more interesting elements to the investigation as it looked very simple. While the realistic nature of the film is appreciable, these scenes needed some strong set up so the pay-off would have been better.
Eugien Jos Chirammel's vision in not going overboard in presenting any emotion and characters makes this an appreciable attempt. With better writing and strong investigation portions, the movie would have benefitted heavily. Shine Tom Chacko proves himself to be a versatile actor without resorting to any sort of eccentricities, he got renowned for. His ability to carry this do-gooder role without an ounce of hesitation, makes it one of his best performances, after being typecast.
Naseef, Anagha Annet, Deepak Parambol characters had lot of layers but writing did not explore them as much as the story needed. It provides us details about them but not let us understand them. Still, their performances make it believable that such characters exist. Vincy Aloshious got first credit but she did not have such strong role in the film. Looks like the controversy did help her. Overall, the movie is a decent thriller with themes about male chauvinism, hatred, harassment and redemption, inclusivity.
Bottomline:
Soothravakyam is decent and watchable with dragged out portions remaining as sore thumb.
Rating: 2.75/5
