posted on: Jun 24, 2016 12:49PM

In a very rare and challenging situation a plane has landed on the south pole after a 10 hour journey through the dark and frigid Antarctic winter. This is only the 3rd time in the station's 60-year history that anyone has flown to the pole during the six-month polar winter when temperatures can sink below minus-100 degrees and the only light comes from the moon and stars. The plane has landed to rescue one sick worker, amongst dozens who work at the Amundsen-Scott research station.
