When Ravana worshipped the Atma Lingam for Immortality..!

Today we will explore how Lord Shiva stopped Ravana from getting the power of immortality, which in turn became the history of the Murudeshwara Temple. Located in Uttara Kannada, it is known as a temple with the second largest idol of Lord Shiva. Mythology narrates the story of Ravana who intended to become immortal by obtaining the Atma Lingam. So, he did severe penance after which the merciful Lord gave him the permission to have the Atma Lingam for himself. There was only one instruction for Ravana in this regard. He was not supposed to put the lingam on the ground before reaching Lanka.

Knowing that Ravana could misuse the power of immortality, Lord Vishnu along with Lord Ganesha, planned to trick him. Knowing that he worships the setting sun everyday, Lord Vishnu made it seem like the evening was approaching, seeing which Ravana prepared for worship. He was in a fix as he did not know what to do with the Atma Lingam. Just then Lord Ganesha came there disguised as a Brahmin. He offered to hold the Atma Lingam while Ravana offered his prayers to the Sun God. But Lord Ganesha put a condition that he would call Ravana’s name thrice and if he doesn’t return, he will put the Atma Lingam down.

So, when Ravana went to offer his worship, Lord Ganesh called his name thrice but in a very low tone and it could not reach Ravana. As agreed he placed the Atma Lingam on the ground which become immovable. When Ravana returned and tried to move it, the lingam was broken into pieces. This place marks the site of the temple. The Murudeshwara temple is also known for having a 20 storied Rajagopuram and is a place which all of us must visit at least once in our lifetime.
