“ముహూర్తం" అను పదానికి రెండు అర్థాలు గోచరిస్తాయి. మొదటిది కాలాన్ని సూచించే కాలమానం. రెండవది ఏదైనా ఒక కార్యం ప్రారంభించేటందుకు ఎంచుకున్న సమయం.

అమరకోశం ప్రకారం - తే క్షణాః ద్వాదశ ముహూర్త ఇత్యుచ్యతే - 12 క్షణాలు కూడిన కాలాన్ని ముహూర్తం అంటారు. హూర్ఛతి కుటిలో భవతి శుభాశుభదర్శనాదితి ముహూర్తః - హుర్ఛాకౌటిల్యే - శుభాశుభ దర్శనం వల్ల కుటిలమగునట్టిది. ముహుర్ముహురియర్తీతి ముహూర్తః -  ఋగతౌ - పలుమారును పోవుచుండునది. ఘటికాద్వయం ముహుర్తః  - 1 ముహూర్తం - రెండు గడియల సేపు.

శబ్దార్ధ రత్నాకరం ప్రకారం: ముహూర్తమనగా - నిమేషకాలము, రెండు గడియల కాలం, నలువది యెనిమిది నిముషముల కాలము, లిప్త, శుభకార్యములకు నిర్ణయించు కాలం.
